What You Get with NAKIVO Backup & Replication for Hyper-V Environments
Powerful Hyper-V Backup
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is an agentless Hyper-V backup solution that performs image-based, incremental and application-consistent Hyper-V backups. NAKIVO Backup & Replication relies on Hyper-V’s Resilient Change Tracking (RCT) technology to create incremental backups and copies only the data that has changed since the last backup session (that is, increments). Hyper-V backups are also application-consistent, preserving the transactional consistency of data in applications like Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, Microsoft SQL and others.
Advanced VM Backup Copy
Create a copy of your business-critical backups so that your data is safe and recoverable even if your primary Hyper-V backup becomes corrupted, lost or accidentally deleted. Data protection best practices dictate that you should have three copies of each VM with two copies stored on separate devices and at least one copy located offsite or in the cloud. This eliminates a single point of failure and ensures an additional level of data safety. Job Chaining in NAKIVO Backup & Replication makes this entire process quick and stress-free. Simply set up your Hyper-V backup copy jobs to run right after the initial backup job is complete, resulting in streamlined routine backup activities and reduced management overhead.
Instant VM Boot
Boot your Microsoft Hyper-V VMs directly from compressed and deduplicated backups to achieve as tight RTOs as possible. With Flash VM Boot, you can avoid time-consuming full-scale recoveries and instead resume your workflow in minutes. Once the VM is running, you can migrate the machine to the production environment for permanent recovery. Any changes you make to the recovered VM do not affect the backup. This feature significantly reduces downtime after a VM failure, ensuring that IT disruptions do not result in lost revenue. Flash VM Boot can also be used to safely test system updates and application patches before applying them to the production environment.
Instant Granular Recovery
Instantly recover individual files, folders and application objects (for Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, Microsoft SQL) directly from compressed and deduplicated Hyper-V backups. With granular recovery, you do not need to perform a full recovery to restore single or multiple items located in a VM backup. Instead, you can search and browse through VM backups to find the item you need directly in the NAKIVO Backup & Replication web-based dashboard. Once you have selected the item, you can recover it to the source or a custom location, with all the file permissions restored. If your primary backup is unavailable, you can recover items from a backup copy located in the cloud or offsite.
Effective Backup Administration
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides several tools to improve Hyper-V backup efficiency and simplify backup administration. You can set up backup policies to protect your Hyper-V VMs based on parameters such as VM name, size, location, power state and so on. Once configured, NAKIVO Backup & Replication regularly scans your inventory and automatically adds or removes VMs from jobs according to the chosen parameters. In addition to individual Hyper-V VMs, you can add entire Hyper-V hosts to a backup job. To reduce administrative overhead even more, you can run custom pre- or post-job scripts, link jobs to run one after another and integrate with third-party monitoring, automation, and orchestration tools using HTTP APIs.
Instant Backup Verification
As a full backup solution, NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides automated instant verification to ensure the accessibility and recoverability of your backups. When a backup job is completed, the solution can instantly test-recover Hyper-V virtual machine backup (with networking turned off), take a screenshot of the booted OS, or check if the Hyper-V Integration Services are available, and then discard the VM. The results of this operation can then be seen in the product’s interface or received via email. This way, the Instant Verification feature can test your backups beforehand, allowing you to rest assured that your Hyper-V VM backups are functional and bootable.
Data Reduction Techniques
Growing storage space requirements can put a strain on your business when you back up Hyper-V VMs daily. To mitigate this issue, NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers built-in data reduction technologies, such as swap data exclusion, data deduplication and compression. NAKIVO Backup & Replication skips swap data and unused blocks, which allows for more effective use of storage space. Moreover, NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically deduplicates all VM backups over an entire storage repository. Later on, the software solution compresses deduplicated blocks, which further decreases backup size for even more storage space savings.
Multiple Storage Destinations
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides you with various backup storage options. You can store your Hyper-V virtual machine backups and backup copies on local storage, CIFS/NFS shares or deduplication appliances. You can send backups directly to public cloud storage platforms, such as Amazon S3, Azure or Wasabi, to have an extra copy of critical data in case the primary gets lost or corrupted. Also, you can copy your backups directly to tape cartridges for safe data retention and long-term archival.
Data Transfer Efficiency
NAKIVO Backup & Replication improves Hyper-V virtual machine backup performance and allows you to shrink backup windows and reduce network congestion. The Network Acceleration feature speeds up backup jobs by up to 2 times while decreasing the amount of data sent over LAN and WAN. This way, even if you perform data protection activities during business hours, your production workloads are not affected. With the LAN-free data transfer mode, you can offload production networks, thus reducing backup windows and ensuring high backup performance. You can also regulate network bandwidth to limit bandwidth usage to a user-defined amount with Advanced Bandwidth Throttling.
Full VM Recovery
Recover an entire Hyper-V backup to its latest state or to a previous point in time. When performing the recovery, NAKIVO Backup & Replication transfers the VM's image from the backup to the production site. The recovered VM contains all the relevant data, including configuration, OS, applications, associated data and system state. You can create up to 4,000 recovery points for each VM, which gives you the flexibility of rolling back to that specific point you need. For further convenience, the software allows you to recover multiple VMs within a single job. When you run VM recovery, a new VM is created; the source VM is not reverted to the previous state or replaced with the new VM.
Role-Based Access Control
Set up role-based access control (RBAC) to add an additional layer of security and reduce management overhead. With RBAC, you can control which users are able to access, view and perform specific data protection activities, helping you reduce the risk of accidental deletions and prevent unauthorized access. You can use preset user roles for quick deployment or create roles with custom access rights and permissions to accommodate your unique business needs. This feature lets you create a non-admin user, for example, that would have access to creating VM backup jobs in NAKIVO Backup & Replication but wouldn't be able to fully access repositories, jobs, general system settings, and so on.

Having an extra backup provides an additional level of data protection to ensure successful recovery. You can also create extra copies of Hyper-V backups and send them to the cloud. With Hyper-V backup copies, you can ensure compliance with the 3-2-1 backup rule, allowing you to have a backup plan for any data loss scenario. You can also choose to keep one or multiple copies of your backups, or set custom rules specifying which backups should be copied and when.
Fast Recovery Times
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can instantly recover entire Hyper-V VMs, individual files, folders and application objects directly from compressed and deduplicated backups. In case of unexpected production machine failure or data loss, you can quickly resume your business operations without experiencing significant downtime. The all-in-one software provides a number of powerful recovery options that can help you reach the lowest recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs) possible and cut your recovery times from days to hours, or even minutes.
Long-Term Backup Archival
NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses the GFS retention scheme and offers backup size reduction tools so that you can archive Hyper-VMs without paying exorbitant storage costs. The grandfather-father-son retention scheme (GFS) consolidates and rotates redundant recovery points according to your preferences, ensuring all your data is accounted for without storing excess data. You can also use global deduplication and compression for even further space savings. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can store up to 4,000 recovery points per VM, giving you the flexibility to meet regulatory obligations or corporate guidelines.
Multiple security risks and threats can be eliminated with a comprehensive data protection plan which dictates how to prevent, respond to, and recover from any failure scenario. Therefore, careful backup job scheduling is an essential component of data protection management. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication’s Calendar dashboard, you can view all your data protection jobs (past, present, and future) and reschedule them with ease. This way, you can avoid potential job overlaps, offload production networks and identify vulnerabilities in your backup planning.
Multi-tenant mode in NAKIVO Backup & Replication allows you to deliver backup as a service (BaaS), replication as a service (RaaS) and disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) to your customers. You can create up to 1,000 separate tenants within a single copy of the software and manage them from the tenant dashboard. Tenants’ environments are isolated, which means that a tenant can only access their own data. Tenants can perform their data protection and recovery jobs via the self-service portal and you, as the administrator, can control which jobs they are allowed to access and perform.
Backing up growing Hyper-V environments means that you need to store more data every day. To reduce the size of your backups, NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically skips swap data and unused blocks, which would otherwise be read, processed, transferred, and stored in the repository. To further reduce backup size, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can automatically deduplicate all VM backups across an entire repository. The deduplicated data blocks are then automatically compressed to occupy the least amount of space. Together, these data reduction technologies can significantly reduce the storage space occupied by backups, saving you resources and money.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a full backup and recovery solution capable of protecting virtual, physical, and cloud and SaaS environments. The software delivers powerful yet affordable functionality for small- and medium-sized businesses and large enterprises. You can scale NAKIVO Backup & Replication horizontally or vertically to keep hundreds of hosts and thousands of Hyper-V VMs safe across multiple sites. You can scale out by increasing the number of product components and distributing the workload among them. Also, you can scale up by adding more resources to NAKIVO Backup & Replication, ensuring that even high production workloads remain protected.
Improved Backup Speed and Performance
With the rich functionality of NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can improve your Hyper-V backup performance considerably. NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides you with speed-boosting features, such as Network Acceleration and LAN-free backup mode. Network Acceleration allows you to increase backup and recovery speed even in busy LAN and WAN. With LAN-free data transfer modes, you can offload production networks, thus reducing backup windows and ensuring high backup performance. As a result, these technologies can boost VM backup speed by up to 2 times without affecting your production environment.
Optimized Backup Administration
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can automate most of your data protection activities by running policy-based jobs and setting up effective job schedules. NAKIVO Backup & Replication allows you to set up specific data protection policies, which would regularly scan your infrastructure and automatically add/remove Hyper-V VMs from corresponding jobs based on the selected criteria (such as name, size, location, power state, configuration, and so on). With сarefully scheduled and organized Hyper-V backup jobs, you can achieve impressive results – eliminate job overlaps, minimize administrative overhead, avoid retention policy gaps and, eventually, save you time and effort.
Simplify Hyper-V Data Protection with NAKIVO Backup & Replication
Store a Backup Copy Offsite or in the Cloud
Store at least one copy of your backup data in a remote location. With an offsite backup, you know that your data is recoverable even if your primary backup at the production site is lost or corrupted. Use NAKIVO Backup & Replication to create new copies of your Hyper-V VM backups without interfering with your production VMs. Choose any of the public clouds supported by the solution as a destination: Amazon S3, Wasabi or Microsoft Azure. For long-term data retention, write a copy of your backup to tape and make sure it is kept in a safe place.
Keep Your Backups Secure
Take care about the security of your Hyper-V backups by encrypting your data when sending it offsite and setting the role-based access controls (RBAC). NAKIVO Backup & Replication relies on AES 256-bit encryption. You can encrypt your data both in flight (when it travels to the repository) and at rest (when the data is already in the repository). Use the RBAC feature to grant access rights and permissions to other employees. When assigning these rights, follow the principle of the least privilege: only grant the bare minimum of permissions for the employee to get the job done.
Manage Bandwidth Consumption
Set bandwidth throttling rules to prevent backup jobs from consuming more network resources than you can allocate. With bandwidth throttling you ensure that your backup jobs don’t disrupt the performance of other operations, which is especially important during peak hours. First, identify how much bandwidth your business operations require. Second, create bandwidth rules to apply the appropriate bandwidth limit to your backup jobs. You can create both global and per-job rules. If the circumstances change, you can raise or lower the bandwidth limit at any time.
Verify VMs Are Recoverable
The worst time to find out that your Microsoft Hyper-V backups are not recoverable is when your primary machine goes down. Make sure this is never a problem with the Instant Verification feature. NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers two verification methods for Hyper-V backups. Boot Verification starts the target VM and checks whether the hypervisor tools are running. Screenshot Verification boots the target VM and takes a screenshot of the VM screen. With both methods, you can receive an email report or check the job dashboard to verify that the Hyper-V backup job was successful.
Create a Suitable Retention Policy
When configured properly, a retention policy allows you to retain Hyper-V backups for any period that you need without letting them consume too much space. To create a retention policy, define how many recovery points you want to keep and how often they should be rotated. A recovery point is created each time you perform a backup and can be used for point-in-time restores. The amount and life cycle of recovery points depends on the type of data that your company is dealing with. NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports up to 4,000 recovery points for each Hyper-V and relies on the grandfather-father-son (GFS) rotation scheme.
Allocate Enough Resources
Make sure to provision enough CPU, RAM, bandwidth and disk space for the backup processes to run smoothly. Backups are resource-intensive operations during which data is read, processed and transferred. The backup speed depends on the speed of these processes and the bandwidth available, but it is never higher than the speed of the slowest process in the data transfer chain. By increasing the amount of resources available to the backup software, you speed up backup jobs. Finally, when estimating the amount of the required storage space, it’s best to provision at least the same amount of space for your backups as consumed by your VMs.
Automate Routine Tasks
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides multiple features to simplify routing data protection tasks. Create policy rules to automate adding Microsoft Hyper-V VMs to the jobs or excluding them. Policy rules can be based on your preferred parameters, such as VM name, size, tag, location, and so on. When you create a new VM, NAKIVO Backup & Replication checks whether the VM matches any of your policies and automatically adds it to the respective job. The same works for existing VMs whose parameters change. If the VM no longer matches the policies, it is automatically excluded from the job.
Schedule Backups Carefully
Plan backup jobs and job chains carefully to prevent job overlaps and potential network congestion. Backups are resource-intensive and can affect the performance of the concurrent processes, especially during business hours. If you set two or more backup jobs to run simultaneously, it can create a bottleneck and slow down your entire network. Proper scheduling can help you ensure that your resources are used optimally. You can monitor the schedule and planned of all your past, current and future jobs in the Calendar dashboard available in the NAKIVO Backup & Replication user interface.

How NAKIVO Backup & Replication Helps You Resolve Hyper-V Data Protection Challenges
Protecting Hyper-V Environments
Even in the best of circumstances, Hyper-V VMs can become corrupted, accidentally deleted or malfunction at any time, exposing your business to data loss. If you do not have a Hyper-V backup solution in place, recovering your lost data can range from time-consuming and expensive to impossible. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can perform image-based, incremental and application-aware backups of your Microsoft Hyper-V VMs to ensure your data is protected and recoverable. Image-based backups capture an entire Hyper-V VM at a point in time, including configuration files. This ensures that your VM is immediately ready for production after recovery. Application-awareness means that VM backups maintain the transactional consistency of applications, such as SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory. To keep your data safe, enable AES 256-bit encryption to protect Microsoft Hyper-V VM backups at rest and in-flight and use role-based access controls to limit unauthorized access.
Eliminating a Single Point of Failure
Data protection is all about resiliency – a single backup does not mean that your data is safe. If, for example, you store all your data on-premises, a site disaster could result in significant financial and data losses. The most effective way to eliminate a single point of failure is to have multiple backup copies with at least one located offsite or in the cloud. NAKIVO Backup & Replication makes it easy to create multiple backup copies of Microsoft Hyper-V VMs and supports a wide range of local storage devices, tape media and cloud storage providers. The Backup Copy feature creates mirrored copies of your Microsoft Hyper-V backups without affecting the source machine. From the same window, you can then send your copies directly to your preferred onsite, offsite or cloud storage destinations. NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and Wasabi; leading NAS vendors; data deduplication appliances; and traditional and virtual tape libraries.
Day-to-day operational disruptions, such as lost files and objects or a malfunctioning Hyper-V VM, are simple problems to fix but often result in unnecessarily long downtime for businesses. For example, recovering an entire Hyper-V VM to retrieve individual files or objects wastes time and resources, resulting in hidden costs for a business. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can perform granular recoveries and use Flash VM Boot to ensure small IT issues do not cost you lost revenue. Use Instant Object Recovery and Instant File Recovery to restore individual files or application objects back to source or custom locations directly from Hyper-V backups. This eliminates the need to first perform a time-consuming full recovery. If a VM becomes unavailable, use Flash VM Boot to nearly instantly boot a Hyper-V VM on a target host directly from a backup. By allowing you to continue your workflow without delay, Flash VM Boot dramatically reduces the potential consequences of IT downtime.
Lowering Storage Costs
For businesses with a large or growing virtual infrastructure, Microsoft Hyper-V VM backups require significant storage space, which translates to high hardware and cloud storage costs. NAKIVO Backup & Replication helps you cut these costs with a set of backup size reduction tools. Data deduplication removes duplicated data blocks from the Backup Repository, in up to a 30-time reduction in storage requirements. Compression further reduces the size of backups by allowing you to choose the balance between backup size and backup speed that best fits your business needs. NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers three compression levels: fast, medium and best. Swap data and unused block exclusion prevents unnecessary swap files, swap partitions and unused blocks from being included in backups. Employed together, the backup size reduction toolkit makes it simple to optimize your existing hardware and lower monthly cloud storage payments.
Minimizing IT Impact on Business Processes
For businesses with a large virtual infrastructure, it can be a constant battle to fit backup windows within non-business hours. At the same time, other businesses need to perform backups during business hours to meet tight RPOs. Fortunately, with NAKIVO Backup & Replication, one of the most cost-effective Hyper-V backup solutions, you can shrink backup times and reduce network congestion. Increase the speed of backups by up to 2 times with network acceleration and backup size reduction tools. Backup size reduction tools include Resilient Change Tracking (RCT), global deduplication, log truncation and skipping swap data and unused blocks. Set limits on how much bandwidth backups can use during business hours to minimize network congestion. Adapt to changing circumstances by raising or lowering the limit at any time. Completely eliminate network slowdowns and boost Hyper-V backup speed by enabling LAN-free data transfers.
Reducing Administrative Overhead
Each minute of downtime equals lost revenue and inefficient data protection practices result in unnecessarily high administrative overhead. Furthermore, as your data protection activities become more complex, the chance for mistakes, oversights and retention gaps to emerge rises sharply. To counter these risks, NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers a set of backup management features designed to ensure data remains protected in infrastructures of any complexity. Use Policy-Based Data Protection to automate Hyper-V backups according to preferred parameters, such as VM tag, size or configuration. Comprehensive policies ensure VMs are properly accounted for, preventing policy gaps from emerging. Automate routine Hyper-V backup jobs to run on your preferred schedule and monitor completed and future tasks on the Calendar Dashboard. Integrate monitoring, automation and orchestration solutions with the NAKIVO Backup & Replication HTTP API for advanced automation controls.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to back up Hyper-V machines?
To back up a Hyper-V VM, you need to create a backup job. Click Create on the Dashboard and then click Microsoft Hyper-V backup job. After that, specify which VMs to back up, choose the backup destination and how often backups should occur. In the end, specify which options should be used.
Can I create different bandwidth throttling rules for different jobs?
Yes. There are two types of bandwidth rules: global and per job. Global rules apply to all backup jobs, while per-job rules apply only to selected jobs. When applied to a specific job, per-job bandwidth rules have higher priority than the global rules. You can modify or disable/enable each of your rules.
Can I receive notifications and reports over email?
Yes, you can configure email settings, email notifications, and automatic reports in Email notifications. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can send notifications on the completion status of backup jobs (on global and per-job level), alarm (error) notifications, warning notifications, and more. You can specify one or more email addresses to send the notifications to.
What benefits does swap data exclusion offer?
Swap data files constantly grow, which results in gigabytes of unnecessary data being processed, transferred and stored every time you run a backup. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can automatically skip swap files and partitions during the backup process. Swap data exclusion can help you save on storage space, network resources, and the associated costs.
Can I use NAKIVO Backup & Replication to perform replication of Hyper-V VMs?
Yes, you can use NAKIVO Backup & Replication to create replicas, or point-in-time copies of Hyper-V VMs. You can automate replication jobs to save time on routine tasks. In the event of a disruption, you can fail over to your replica VM and then fail back when your production environment is up.
What Hyper-V backup options can I choose?
In the Job Options section, you can give a name to the backup job and specify the details of how this backup job should be performed. For example, you can enable or disable application-aware mode and change tracking. Other options include network acceleration, encryption, VM verification, bandwidth throttling, and more.
Can I enable log truncation when performing Hyper-V backup?
Yes. NAKIVO Backup & Replication allows you to truncate Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft SQL Server transaction logs. The transaction logs are deleted (or truncated) after the backup job is completed so that the log files are available in the VM backup. Set up log truncation in the Pre and Post Actions section.
What is Hyper-V Manager?
Microsoft Hyper-V Manager is an administrative tool that can be used to create, modify and remove VMs and hosts running in a Hyper-V virtual environment. However, Hyper-V Manager doesn’t offer the functionality to fully protect your data. NAKIVO Backup & Replication addresses this issue, letting you reliably back up your Hyper-V virtual machines.
