Why Choose NAKIVO Backup & Replication as the Backup Solution for MSPs
One Solution, Multi-Platform Support
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is an all-in-one backup, granular recovery, replication and disaster recovery solution for virtual, cloud, physical and SaaS workloads. The solution can protect VMware vSphere, VMware Cloud Director, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Amazon EC2, Linux and Windows servers and workstations, Oracle Database and Microsoft 365 environments. The multiple deployment options allow you to install the solution on Windows, Linux or directly on a range of NAS devices. Once deployed, the centralized web interface provides you with fine-grained control over data protection activities and infrastructure resources.
Multiple Backup Destinations
As a managed service provider, you can offer your clients a variety of backup targets to meet all their data protection needs, storage requirements and budgets. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can make sure your clients get all the functionality they need to implement the reliable 3-2-1 backup strategy. Backups can be stored on local storage, on file shares (CIFS, NFS), on tape (physical tape libraries and Amazon VTL), in public clouds (like Amazon S3, Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, and Microsoft Azure), and on NAS devices. With a range of backup destinations, your clients gain maximum protection for their workloads and you deliver successful MSP backup services.
Solid Ransomware Protection
NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers a set of ransomware protection features for backups. Use S3 Object Lock in Amazon S3 or send backups to immutable storage in a local Linux-based repository to make backups. Immutability protects backups from encryption and blocking by ransomware. You can also create air-gapped backups on tape, where your clients’ data is practically unreachable for ransomware. For further protection, use two-factor authentication (2FA) and role-based access control (RBAC). With 2FA enabled, a code provided by the Google Authenticator mobile app or email is needed to access the solution and backups. 2FA can be enabled for your staff and for tenants with access to the Self-Service Portal.
Versatile Recovery Options for Any Scenario
NAKIVO Backup & Replication gives you a wide range of recovery options to ensure swift recoveries in any data-loss event. The Flash VM Boot feature makes it possible to instantly boot VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V VMs from backups and migrate them to production for permanent use if necessary. In addition, the solution offers cross-platform VM recovery between VMware and Hyper-V environments. For files and application objects (in Microsoft SQL, Active Directory, Exchange, etc.), you can perform instant granular recoveries to the original or a custom location with just a few clicks. Moreover, you can perform physical-to-virtual (P2V) recoveries by instantly booting a VMware VM from a physical machine backup.
Advanced Multi-Tenant Architecture
With a single instance of NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can create and manage up to 1,000 tenants. Completely isolated from each other, these tenants represent your MSP backup clients. The solution’s multi-tenant mode also delivers flexible tenant resource allocation options. You can allocate resources in your data protection infrastructure, including hosts, clusters, VMs, Backup Repositories, and Transporters, to tenants to meet their needs and manage their data protection activities. Tenants remain isolated and cannot access the environment and jobs of other tenants. To streamline the process of managing a large number of tenants, the MSP solution provides advanced backup scheduling and automation options.
Secure Connection to Remote Environments
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a backup solution for MSPs that allows you to establish a secure connection to the remote IT infrastructures of your clients over a single port without having to establish a VPN connection with each client. With the Direct Connect feature in NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can connect directly to your clients’ environments and manage their data protection activities, including performing backups/recoveries, add or managing backup repositories, etc.
VMware Cloud Director Backup
When using VMware Cloud Director as a cloud service delivery platform, MSPs need to make sure that client workloads are protected and recoverable if a data loss incident occurs. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can easily back up VMware Cloud Director objects, such as vApps, individual VMs and vApp metadata to local storage, NAS and the cloud (Amazon S3, Wasabi, etc.). When needed, you can restore objects directly to the Cloud Director hierarchy.
Offload Backup and Recovery Activities
NAKIVO Backup & Replication helps you shift some of the data protection activities to your clients so that you can spend less time managing your MSP backup business and more time growing it. In the Self-Service Portal, tenants can manage their own backup, replication and recovery jobs. To control tenants’ access to NAKIVO Backup & Replication, use role-based access control (RBAC) to assign roles to tenants and customize permissions at broad and granular levels. You can give your tenants just enough access in the Self-Service Portal so they can perform their own backup and recovery tasks.
Powerful Performance Boosting Features
NAKIVO Backup & Replication has been designed with built-in tools for higher backup speeds, shorter backup windows and maximum storage savings. These powerful performance boosting features minimize the impact of data protection activities on core business operations. Network Acceleration reduces the amount of data transferred via your network. Global Deduplication ensures that only unique data is stored across a backup repository regardless of the protected platform. You can optimize backup traffic even further with LAN-free data transfer for virtual machine backups. In addition, the solution offers advanced integration with deduplication appliances like Dell EMC Data Domain (with DD Boost support), HPE StoreOnce (with Catalyst integration, NEC Hydrastor and Quantum DXi.

Why Managed Service Providers Choose NAKIVO Backup & Replication for BaaS
Using a single deployment of NAKIVO Backup & Replication, provide backup as a service (BaaS) to up to 1,000 clients. Manage your services from anywhere using a simple web-based interface that provides complete visibility into the tenants’ data protection resources and activities. Let your tenants monitor and manage their own data protection activities using the Self-Service Portal, where they are completely isolated from each other.
Solid Ransomware Protection
To make your clients’ backups immutable, store them in Amazon S3 or in a local Linux-based repository, where they can be protected from encryption or deletion by ransomware for as long as you need. To create air-gapped backups, send backup copies to tape as an additional security layer against ransomware. The solution allows you to follow the 3-2-1-1 backup rule to maximize the chances of successful recovery after ransomware. The rule requires at least 3 copies of business data on 2 different storage media, with 1 stored offsite and 1 air-gapped or immutable backup.
Simple Backup Data Tiering
NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers multiple onsite and offsite backup storage options to help you avoid a single point of failure. Depending on your organization’s retention policies and the frequency with which you need to access backup data, you can choose to store backups locally, offsite, in the cloud (Amazon S3, Wasabi, Microsoft Azure) or on tape. To simplify the process of creating backup copies, the solution delivers the Job Chaining feature. Use the feature to create a chain of backup copies triggered by a successful primary backup. For example, store daily backups onsite for easy access, send weekly backups to a public cloud and retain monthly backups on detachable storage kept offsite for long-term retention.
Instantly recover deleted/corrupted files and application objects in apps like Microsoft SQL Server, Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange, among others. Use the search function to find the files and objects, select from up to 4,000 recovery points and restore the necessary items to the original or different location in minutes. Boot business-critical VMs directly from backups to help your clients meet near-zero RTOs. Once the VM is operational, move it back to production for permanent use. The functionality is available out of the box without any additional setup. For mixed physical and virtual environments, recover physical Windows and Linux machines from backups as VMware vSphere VMs with the physical-to-virtual recovery feature.
Avoid overhead costs with flexible licensing options. Purchase a pool of licensed workloads and distribute them between your clients based on each client’s needs. You can reassign workloads at any time to avoid wasting money on unused resources. NAKIVO Backup & Replication for MSPs is licensed on a per workload basis, where a workload is 1 VM (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV), 1 Amazon EC2 instance, a physical Windows/Linux machine (1 server or 3 workstations), 1 Oracle Database or 1 Microsoft 365 user. MSPs can license the solution as a monthly subscription or commit to an annual license for more savings.
Storage Cost Savings
NAKIVO Backup & Replication runs incremental backups using native VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V VM change tracking technologies (CBT and RCT respectively). The solution helps you save storage space by saving only the data blocks that have been changed since the previous backup. Additionally, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can exclude swap files and unused blocks from backups to reduce storage capacity requirements and improve the cost efficiency of your services.
Intuitive Step-by-Step Wizards
Whether providing a fully-managed or co-managed BaaS offering, both MSPs and clients benefit from a centralized web-based interface and easy-to-use wizards. Clients can use the Self-Service portal to carry out their own backup and recovery tasks without the need for any specialized training. All steps are clearly defined and ensure that data protection activities can be easily integrated into MSP workflows.
Automate Routine Tasks
Always at the forefront of backup automation, NAKIVO Backup & Replication regularly introduces features to optimize your routine operations. For example, you can create policy rules to automate the addition and exclusion of VMs to backup jobs. By creating policy rules based on VM name, size, tag, location and other parameters, you can ensure optimal data protection without having to track every change in your clients’ environments. Similarly, schedule backup jobs using the intuitive Calendar to ensure the optimal use of resources. In addition to driving down the cost of administration, the solution’s automation functionality reduces the likelihood of human error.
Protect and Recover from Ransomware
Use NAKIVO Backup & Replication to send backups to Amazon S3 or a local Linux-based repository, where they can be made immutable. Immutability protects data from changes and deletion, thereby preventing encryption of backup data by ransomware. With a backup copy at hand, you can quickly recover your data if ransomware blocks the production workloads. Restore specific files and app objects in Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange, and Active Directory. Boot VMs directly from backups with the Flash VM Boot for fast recovery. With the Instant Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) feature, restore physical Windows/Linux machines to VMware vSphere VMs. Finally, you can recover cross-platform between Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere VMs.
Offload Tasks to Tenants
NAKIVO MSP backup solution can be partially administered by tenants. Delegate data protection activities via the Self-Service Portal, where tenants can edit and update their inventory, manage Transporters, Backup Repositories, jobs, groups, local users, and user roles. However, tenants do not have visibility of or access to other tenants’ activities. Use role-based access control to determine what your tenants can do in the Self-Service Portal. By offloading regular data protection activities to tenants, you can focus on other priorities key to growing your MSP backup business.
Enable Global Deduplication
Deduplicating your customers’ backup data in a way that is simple, reliable, and quick can help you reduce storage space requirements for VM backups. In NAKIVO Backup & Replication, all backups across a Backup Repository are deduplicated by default regardless of the protected platform. By excluding duplicate data blocks from backups, it is possible to reduce storage space by up to 30 times. If you are aiming for maximum efficiency in the utilization of disk space, NAKIVO Backup & Replication delivers advanced integration with deduplication appliances, such as EMC Data Domain (with DD Boost support), HP StoreOnce (with Catalyst integration), NEC NYDRAstor, and Quantum DXi.
Diversify Your Backup Targets
Store backups and backup copies in different locations to avoid a single point of failure and ensure that your clients’ data is recoverable in any data-loss scenario. NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers multiple data storage options: local storage, file shares (CIFS, NFS), public clouds (Amazon S3, Wasabi, Amazon EBS, Microsoft Azure), NAS appliances, and tape. The choice of the right combination of storage options for a client will depend on the type of business, on the client’s data protection needs, RTOs, and RPOs, among other factors.
Test Backups to Ensure Recoverability
NAKIVO Backup & Replication allows you to automatically verify VM recoverability. The backup software for MSPs runs a VM with networking disabled and takes a screenshot of the booted OS. You can see the screenshot in the web interface or receive it in your inbox. Alternatively, NAKIVO Backup & Replication checks the availability of VMware Tools or Hyper-V Integration Services hypervisor tools installed on a VM. The Instant Verification feature provides you with a reliable means of ensuring that backups are usable for full VM and instant granular recoveries as soon as your tenants need them.
