Why Is Verification Important?
The mere fact that you have a VM backup or a VM replica does not mean that you can guarantee a successful recovery. VM backups and replicas can be corrupted or not bootable, even if the data protection software has performed properly. The worst time to find out that your backup is bad is when your VM is down. If you don’t have backup copies or VM replicas at an offsite location, you are left without any viable means of quickly restoring business processes.
To protect you from such disasters, NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides an Instant Verification feature. Instead simply of hoping for the best, you can set up automated verification for your VM backups and replicas that is performed in a matter of minutes.
How Does Instant Verification Work?
With Instant Verification, you can automatically verify recoverability of VMware and Hyper-V VMs. For this purpose, NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers the following approaches to VM verification:
To verify VMware and Hyper-V backups, NAKIVO Backup & Replication relies on the Flash VM Boot feature. After a VM backup job has completed data transfer, the product can instantly run the VM from the newly created backup (with networking turned off), wait until the OS has booted and make a screenshot, then discard the test-recovered VM. You can view the results of the verification procedure in the product’s interface or choose to receive an email report with the OS screenshot attached.
To verify a VM replica, NAKIVO Backup & Replication powers on said replica with networking turned off, makes a screenshot of the OS, then powers off the VM replica. Your review options are the same: you can either see the results in the NAKIVO Backup & Replication interface or receive a screenshot via email.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication allows for verifying that your VMware and Hyper-V VMs can be successfully recovered through checking availability of hypervisor tools – VMware Tools or Hyper-V Integration Services – installed on the VMs.
Once the backup job is complete, NAKIVO Backup & Replication test-recovers the VM with Flash VM Boot, disables networking, and listens to the OS heartbeat to verify that the guest OS is up and running. This way, you can get proof of your VM’s recoverability which, again, can be delivered to you directly in the product’s interface or to the inbox.
Similarly, once NAKIVO Backup & Replication completes a VM replication job, the software tunes on the VM replica (with networking disabled) and verifies that the guest OS has successfully booted by checking whether the required hypervisor tools are running.
With the Instant Verification feature, you have proof that your VM backups or replicas are usable, and can rest assured that your VMs can be recovered in case of disaster. Instant Verification can be run on demand or be scheduled to run automatically, saving you time and effort.
