VM Backup Appliance Based on QNAP NAS – Available Today!

While NAKIVO Backup & Replication already provides a variety of deployment options, we’ve received a lot of requests from our partners and customers to extend our supported platforms to QNAP NAS. (By the way, did you know that QNAP stands for “Quality Network Appliance Provider”? The name itself is telling…) QNAP delivers cutting-edge NAS solutions featuring ease-of-use, robust operation, large storage capacity, and reliability.

We have worked closely with the QNAP team, and I’m excited to share the great news with you today: NAKIVO Backup & Replication v7 can now be installed on QNAP NAS servers and is available in the QNAP App Center! By deploying NAKIVO Backup & Replication on a QNAP NAS server, you can turn your NAS into a high-performance VM backup appliance for VMware and Hyper-V:

NAKIVO VM Backup Appliance based on QNAP NAS

NAKIVO Backup & Replication can be installed on x86-based QNAP NAS servers, including entry-level, mid-range, and high-end SMB and Enterprise ones. The installation process is simple and straightforward – just locate NAKIVO Backup & Replication in the QNAP App Center and click Install.

When installed on a QNAP NAS, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can fully use the available NAS resources to perform VM data protection and recovery: bandwidth, CPU, RAM, and disk space for storing VM backups.

By installing NAKIVO Backup & Replication on QNAP, you create an all-in-one VM backup appliance that combines backup hardware, software, storage, and data deduplication in a single device, which can protect and recover VMware and Hyper-V environments.

A VM backup appliance based on QNAP NAS provides other great benefits. First of all, you pay for a NAS that you would use for backup storage, but you get a dedicated VM backup appliance, which will process your backups and offload data protection tasks from your VMware/Hyper-V environment. Compared to purpose-built backup appliances with similar characteristics, you’re saving at least 5X. Bravo!

What is also important, is that you separate virtual infrastructure and backup software. This is simple and logical – if backup software runs in a VM, and your VM host goes down, you lose both production VMs and the ability to recover. By installing NAKIVO Backup & Replication on QNAP NAS, you’ll be able to recover even if parts of your virtual infrastructure become unavailable.

Yet another great advantage is the increased VM backup speed. If backup software is installed in a VM, its performance is reduced by the overhead of network protocols such as NFS and CIFS. However, when you install NAKIVO Backup & Replication on QNAP NAS, it can write VM backups directly to NAS disks, eliminating the network overhead and boosting VM backup performance by up to 1.9X!

VM backup appliance based on QNAP NAS can be located onsite or offsite, and does not require any virtual or server infrastructure to receive and store your backups. If you are using AWS EC2, you can also send AWS EC2 VM backups from the cloud to your QNAP NAS, so that you’re safe even if your account credentials get compromised.
