Safe and Reliable Backup to Cloud
By default, all backup jobs in NAKIVO Backup & Replication are incremental. This means that the product does not need to periodically run and store full backups, which takes extra time to complete in addition to occupying more storage space.
All VM backups in a backup repository are automatically deduplicated and compressed to reduce the amount of storage they occupy. When you create a repository, you can choose from several degrees of compression.
To speed up data transfer, NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides the Network Acceleration feature, which uses data compression and traffic reduction techniques. On average, backup jobs can run 2X faster when the Network Acceleration feature is turned on.
To provide maximum protection for your backups, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can use AES 256-bit encryption to secure your data both in flight and at rest. AES 256 is the de facto encryption standard for protecting financial information and transactions worldwide.

Comply with the 3-2-1 Backup Rule
Having a backup at your primary location does not guarantee you can recover it when the need arises. In the event of a disaster, your backups are likely to become unavailable together with your local infrastructure. Storing your backups in the cloud keeps them safe even in the face of unpredicted events. Whether your site is hit by vandalism, ransomware, flood, or a fire, you can rest assured that your VMware, Hyper-V, AWS EC2, Nutanix AHV, and physical server backups are well out of harm’s reach. Backup to cloud adds an extra layer of protection and further reduces the risk of data loss.
Set Up Automatic Backup to Cloud
With the amount of data growing exponentially, it can be challenging to manually manage all data protection activities. With Policy-Based Data Protection, you can enable automatic backup to cloud, making the backup to cloud process fully automated and taken care of. The solution can scan your infrastructure, identify backups matching the policy rules, and add backups to backup copy jobs, which automatically send them to the cloud. You can set up policies based on the backup size, name, tag, location, configuration, or a combination of these parameters.
Minimize Storage Space Consumption
When transferring backups and backup copies offsite or to the cloud, it is critical to consider the amount of available repository space and control its growth. Aside from performing deduplication and compression across repositories, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can automatically skip swap data in data protection operations, including backup to cloud, which results in much smaller and faster backups. If not carefully monitored, swap files and partitions can grow up to 3X the size of RAM. By automatically excluding any swap files from your backups, you can ensure that you store only necessary data.
Control Your Network Traffic
Running resource-intensive data protection jobs, including backup to cloud, may lead to overloads in your LAN or WAN networks, especially during business hours. By setting global bandwidth throttling rules, you can regulate how much bandwidth is allocated to all data protection jobs during specific periods of time. Alternatively, with a per-job limit, you can regulate bandwidth consumption for each job, including backup to cloud. Once you set the limit for your data protection jobs, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can ensure that the data transfer speed from source to target will not exceed the specified value.
Schedule Backup to Cloud Jobs in a Few Clicks
Managing VM backups that go to the cloud is much simpler than babysitting the rotation of disk-based backups offsite, or maintaining a whole secondary environment offsite for backup storage. Instead of spending hours of your time managing and moving your backups offsite, you can take advantage of the "set it and forget it" approach. Using the Calendar Dashboard, you can view how long backup to cloud jobs took to run in the past and the predicted job duration in the future. This way, you can monitor all you data protection jobs and carefully plan how to back up to cloud in the most efficient way.
Build a Flexible and Scalable Offsite Storage
Cloud environments can instantly adapt to your needs, as there is no such thing as "not enough space" in the cloud: you can expand your storage space as required. Instead of purchasing and configuring new servers or hard drives for your offsite backup infrastructure, with just a few clicks, you can add more space to your backup repository. This results in a lower total cost of ownership for offsite backups. You also win from a time and maintenance perspective, as you do not need to maintain an additional environment in a second location.
Recover What You Need
Once they are in the cloud, you can access your backups at any time and from anywhere, even from home or on the go using a mobile device. Moreover, if disaster strikes, you can easily recover your files, application objects, or entire VMs from compressed and deduplicated backups stored in the cloud. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can restore backup data across platforms, allowing you to recover VMware VMs to a Hyper-V environment and vice versa. Additionally, you can recover physical machines to VMware or Hyper-V VMs, ensuring data recovery under any circumstances. The product offers multiple recovery options, adding to the overall flexibility of your data protection activities.
Benefit from Simplicity and Usability
NAKIVO Backup & Replication was designed with simplicity and usability in mind. The Calendar Dashboard offers advanced job scheduling functionality, allowing you to view all backup to cloud jobs (past, current, and future) and organize them in the most efficient manner. With the Global Search feature, you can find any item (including VMs, backups, replicas, jobs, repositories, transporters, etc.) by simply typing its name in the search bar. Once the latest product features become available, you can install the updates right from the product’s interface thanks to Auto-Update. Moreover, you can have all your technical questions answered in no time by chatting with our support team without leaving the product’s interface.
Policy-Based Data Protection
NAKIVO Backup & Replication allows you to automate your backup to cloud activities by setting policy rules. Policy rules can be based on machine name, tag, size, location, power state, configuration, or a combination of these parameters. Once a policy is created, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can take care of data protection management, making it more efficient and less error-prone. The product can track all changes in your infrastructure and automatically protect the newly-added machines matching the policy rules by including them to corresponding backup to cloud jobs. With Policy-Based Data Protection, you can protect what matters most in your infrastructure with minimal input on your part.
Advanced Bandwidth Throttling
NAKIVO Backup & Replication can perform data protection jobs at the maximum available speed. During business hours, production networks are at risk of being overloaded if too many operations run at the same time. With the Advanced Bandwidth Throttling functionality, you can regulate the data transfer speed by setting global or granular bandwidth rules. Once a bandwidth rule is created, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can limit the usage of LAN/WAN bandwidth by your jobs to a specified value. As a result, this feature can easily help reduce the impact of resource-intensive backup-to-cloud activities on the performance of your business applications.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication was built to provide highly efficient backup performances, even during business hours or over busy LAN and WAN networks. The built-in Network Acceleration functionality can boost the speed of backup to cloud jobs, shorten backup windows, and offload your production networks. This turns the feature into a great helper for environments with comparatively slow and low bandwidth links. With Network Acceleration, the amount of backup data that is transferred over the network during the backup to cloud job is reduced, minimizing network load by up to 50% and allowing you to achieve a 100% boost in performance.
Universal Object Recovery
Individual files or objects can get lost, corrupted, or deleted when you least expect it. Thus, the recovery process must be fast, flexible, and resource-efficient. With the wide variety of recovery options that NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides, you can recover what you need and how you need it in no time. With Universal Application Object Recovery, you can recover any application object by mounting disks from a backup stored in the cloud to the specified machine. A selected application object can be simply restored back to source or a custom location in a few simple steps without having to perform full-scale recovery.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication can ensure that your data remains safe and secure under any circumstances. The Backup Encryption functionality can prevent unauthorized access to your sensitive data by making it unintelligible and impossible to decipher. For this purpose, the solution uses AES 256 encryption, which is the industry standard for military and financial institutions. Your backups can be encrypted while being sent offsite or to the cloud (in flight) as well as when being stored in the backup repository (at rest), ensuring industry-grade protection of your important backup data.
Handling multiple data protection tasks can be an exhausting task, especially when it comes to large infrastructures. NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides a perfect means for making data protection management simple and effective with advanced scheduling tools. The Calendar Dashboard displays all your past, current, and future jobs in the calendar view. With this feature, you can view the status for every job run and identify the available time slots. This way, you can carefully schedule your backup jobs, thus avoiding schedule overlaps and ensuring the effective use of your time and resources.
By default, all backup jobs in NAKIVO Backup & Replication are incremental. For this purpose, both native (VMware CBT, Hyper-V RCT, or Nutanix CRT) and proprietary change-tracking technologies are used. An initial full backup is used as a reference for tracking all following changes. By relying on these change tracking methods, the product can instantly identify the changed data blocks and copy only unique data to the backup repository. As a result of this backup size reduction, backup-to-cloud operations are performed faster and more efficiently.
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can streamline the backup-to-cloud processes by setting them to run right after the initial backup job is complete. The Job Chaining functionality allows you to link various jobs together, including backup, backup copy, replication, and recovery, as well as adding any number of jobs to the chain. Job Chaining allows you to organize existing backup jobs in the preferred order of priority. This feature helps optimize job management, simplify job scheduling, and automate core data protection tasks.
The more your production environment grows, the more challenging its management and monitoring becomes. NAKIVO Backup & Replication addresses this challenge with the Global Search feature. You can instantly find any item in your environment, including VMs, backups, replicas, jobs, repositories, transporters, and other objects. You can filter your search results by choosing to view a subset of results. Once the search is complete, you can access the item details and take a specific action on it (e.g. run a job, add multiple unprotected VMs to a job, start a recovery, etc.).
API for Automation and Orchestration
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides a simple HTTP API to automate and orchestrate data protection tasks, including backup to the cloud. The API covers all of the product features, helping you perform all tasks that are available in the product’s web UI. By leveraging the API, you can easily integrate NAKIVO Backup & Replication with monitoring, automation, and orchestration solutions. As a result, you spend less time on data protection management, reduce the risk of backup job failures, shorten the time needed for recovery, and bring about better cost efficiency.
