NAKIVO Provides a Centralized Backup Solution to a Medical Center
Business Challenge
GynePro is a medical center in Bologna, Italy, that specializes in fertility, reproduction, prenatal health and urogynecology. GynePro has implemented a quality management system compliant with the requirements of the UNI EN ISO 9001: 2015 standard for the provision of medical and reproductive biology services, diagnosis and treatment of couple infertility, Medically Assisted Procreation (MAP) of I, II and III levels. David di Luzio is an IT administrator of the GynePro center and is responsible for the center’s IT infrastructure.
GynePro has three sites, four physical servers, two NAS servers and 20 virtual machines. Virtual machines store different data, including documents, medical reports, accounting data, as well as applications, such as Windows File Server, Mexal, Viewpoint and Arxivar. Data protection is fundamental for the center, in order to maintain the accuracy of medical data, including patient information that needs to be stored over time. If critical data becomes unavailable and there is no proper backup solution in place, GynePro would not be able to provide appropriate care to its patients because different medical equipment would just be not operational. In this case, a reliable data protection solution is a necessity to maintain business continuity for the center.
In the past, backup activities at GynePro were limited to backing up and recovering single files. The process was time-consuming as it was done manually and many errors and failures occurred often during this process. GynePro did not have a centralized backup solution and lacked many functionalities, including backup copy. In April 2019, GynePro started testing different backup solutions and immediately liked NAKIVO Backup & Replication’s ease of use and reliability. According to David, other solutions had several problems with backup validity, so the decision to select NAKIVO Backup & Replication was easy to make for GynePro.
Solution
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a fast, reliable, and affordable solution that can protect virtual, physical, cloud and SaaS environments. NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a versatile solution that can be installed in a variety of ways, including installation on Windows, Linux, NAS devices and deployment as a pre-configured virtual appliance. GynePro finally decided to go with NAKIVO Backup & Replication because of the competitive pricing, the solution’s simplicity and the rich set of functionalities.
“The installation process was easy, immediate and functional. In a few minutes, I had a centralized and professional VM backup solution. The web interface is intuitive and comfortable to navigate. Thanks to such simplicity and ease of management, our technicians save several hours a day on backup administration, time that was previously used to do backups manually. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, we have now centralized and automated all the processes,” says David.
Currently, GynePro takes advantage of full and incremental backups, as well as backup copy functionality. Incremental backups allow GynePro to only back up the changed data blocks, so that backups are faster and smaller. GynePro backs up its entire infrastructure every evening, and each backup job takes a variable amount of time to complete, depending on the nature of the company’s servers. Nevertheless, backups complete successfully and quickly now with NAKIVO Backup & Replication. While with backup copy, GynePro can create and maintain copies of its backups and copy them from one backup repository to another without touching the source VMs.
“Backup copy functionality is awesome, as we can set any backup job to trigger a backup copy job, so that we have an extra layer of security when it comes to minimizing the risk of data loss. The main goal is to reduce or even eliminate downtime across all our departments, and backup copy helps us do just that,” says David.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication’s instant file recovery allows GynePro to recover files and folders to their original location near-instantly. Instant file recovery even allows recovering files and folders not only from backups, but also from backup copies located in a different location. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can recover files to their original location, specify a new location, download them or send them via email. “I enjoy selecting a particular backup from which to recover a file and then in a matter of minutes I have that file already recovered along with the file permissions,” says David.
Results
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, GynePro gained a centralized backup solution and abandoned the old ways of manually backing up and recovering files. The IT team no longer spends excessive amounts of time on backup management because NAKIVO Backup & Replication is an easy-to-use and automated solution. GynePro can now back up its entire infrastructure every day, create backup copies and send them to different locations, as well as recover files near-instantly. “We now have a centralized backup solution with great functionalities and excellent support that is always available. During the course of use, we saved time, in cases where a single file had to be recovered instantaneously. Moreover, in other cases, we were even able to restore a few servers that failed after updates. We also want to take advantage of backing up our VMs to the cloud in the future,” says David.
