What is the difference between a subscription and a perpetual license?
With subscription license:
- You are billed per-workload for a fixed term, during which you receive updates and patches as soon as they are released.
- You receive free 24/7 technical support.
- Licensed units can be easily reassigned between your workloads to adapt to changes in your IT infrastructure.
With perpetual licenses:
- You pay once, and NAKIVO Backup & Replication is available for indefinite use. However, you cannot receive new features and patches without valid support and maintenance.
- You only have access to Standard Support during business hours, Monday through Friday, with a valid support and maintenance agreement. 24/7 Support is available as a paid add-on service.
- You pay for a specific workload type, which means that unused licenses cannot be reassigned to other types of workloads. For example, you can’t back up physical servers with a per-socket perpetual license for virtual machines.
What is a workload?
Subscription licenses are calculated per workload, which is equivalent to one of the following:
- 1 VM (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV
- 1 Amazon EC2 instance
- 1 physical server (Windows, Linux)
- 3 workstations (Windows, Linux)
- 500 GB of NAS file share data
Note that NAKIVO Backup for Microsoft 365 is licensed separately as a subscription and is billed per user.
What are the benefits of shifting from perpetual to subscription licensing for NAKIVO Backup & Replication?
The benefits of shifting from perpetual to subscription licensing for NAKIVO Backup & Replication include a significantly lower initial investment than the perpetual license approach, enabling businesses to get access to more software licenses at a lower price, in addition to instant access to the latest software updates and 24/7 technical support.
