FAQ

What is the difference between a subscription and a perpetual license?

With subscription license:

  • You are billed per-workload for a fixed term, during which you receive updates and patches as soon as they are released.
  • You receive free 24/7 technical support.
  • Licensed units can be easily reassigned between your workloads to adapt to changes in your IT infrastructure.

With perpetual licenses:

  • You pay once, and NAKIVO Backup & Replication is available for indefinite use. However, you cannot receive new features and patches without valid support and maintenance.
  • You only have access to Standard Support during business hours, Monday through Friday, with a valid support and maintenance agreement. 24/7 Support is available as a paid add-on service.
  • You pay for a specific workload type, which means that unused licenses cannot be reassigned to other types of workloads. For example, you can’t back up physical servers with a per-socket perpetual license for virtual machines.

What is a workload?

Subscription licenses are calculated per workload, which is equivalent to one of the following:

  • 1 VM (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV
  • 1 Amazon EC2 instance
  • 1 physical server (Windows, Linux)
  • 3 workstations (Windows, Linux)
  • 500 GB of NAS file share data

Note that NAKIVO Backup for Microsoft 365 is licensed separately as a subscription and is billed per user.

What are the benefits of shifting from perpetual to subscription licensing for NAKIVO Backup & Replication?

The benefits of shifting from perpetual to subscription licensing for NAKIVO Backup & Replication include a significantly lower initial investment than the perpetual license approach, enabling businesses to get access to more software licenses at a lower price, in addition to instant access to the latest software updates and 24/7 technical support.

How often will I be charged for subscription licensing for NAKIVO Backup & Replication?

The frequency of subscription charges depends on the subscription period you agree on with NAKIVO. Subscription licenses for NAKIVO Backup & Replication are annual subscriptions (1 to 5 years) and include free 24/7 Support for the licensed period.

What kind of technical support is available for customers who have shifted from perpetual to subscription licensing for NAKIVO Backup & Replication?

All subscription licenses are bundled with 24/7 software product support effective from the date of purchase and valid for the number of subscription years (1 to 5 years).

Can I combine perpetual and subscription licenses?

However, subscription licenses for NAKIVO Backup for Microsoft 365 can be combined with any license type and solution edition, including perpetual licenses for other types of IT infrastructures.
