About Mas Logistics

Mas Logistics is an Italian company specializing in integrated logistics services for the fashion, outdoor and sporting goods industries.

Founded in 2013, the company provides end-to-end supply chain management, from raw material handling to finished product distribution. Their services also include quality control, product customization, returns management and e-commerce logistics.

Operating across multiple locations in Italy, Mas Logistics manages more than 67,000 square meters of warehouse space and employs approximately 240 people. Technology plays a central role in keeping these operations running, making the availability and protection of the company’s data and applications critical to the business.

The Challenge

As Mas Logistics grew and further digitalized their operations, their IT environment became increasingly important to day-to-day logistics processes and customer service.

The company operates a cloud-hosted infrastructure that supports specialized logistics applications, databases, data exchange platforms, cybersecurity systems and integrations with third-party applications used by customers. An extended outage could therefore disrupt operations and affect customer service, and put both business continuity and service commitments at risk.

Mas Logistics needed a data protection strategy capable of addressing everything from accidental file deletion and application failures to ransomware attacks and even the complete loss of their production environment.

The company also needed to maintain long-term recovery points in a geographically separate location and ensure that both individual applications and the complete IT infrastructure could be recovered quickly when necessary.

The Solution

Mas Logistics selected NAKIVO Backup & Replication after evaluating several data protection solutions. A major factor was the ability to manage backup, VM replication, disaster recovery orchestration and recovery from a single platform, without introducing unnecessary complexity. The solution also provided the VMware integration, flexible retention capabilities and support for immutable S3-compatible cloud storage required by the company.

Today, Mas Logistics’ production environment runs on a dedicated VMware cluster in OVHcloud and hosts approximately 20 virtual machines supporting their core business services. Hosting the environment in European OVHcloud data centers also helps Mas Logistics meet its data residency and data protection requirements.

A second dedicated VMware cluster is hosted in a geographically separate OVHcloud data center and serves as the company’s disaster recovery site. NAKIVO Backup & Replication manages VM replication as well as failover and recovery orchestration between the environments.

For an additional layer of protection, backup copies are stored in Wasabi cloud storage in a separate European data center, independently of the OVHcloud infrastructure.

This creates a multi-layered architecture combining:

  • Backup and recovery with NAKIVO Backup & Replication
  • VM replication and orchestrated disaster recovery
  • A geographically separated secondary VMware environment
  • Cloud backup storage with Wasabi
  • Immutable recovery points
  • Source-side backup encryption
  • Multi-Factor Authentication and controlled administrative access
  • Regular disaster recovery testing

Why Wasabi?

Mas Logistics selected Wasabi as their cloud object storage platform for both technical and financial reasons.

The company needed to retain large amounts of backup data over extended periods without introducing unpredictable storage costs. Wasabi’s pricing model provided the scalability and cost predictability Mas Logistics was looking for.

Integration was another important consideration.

Using native S3 Object Storage support, Wasabi could be configured directly as a cloud backup repository for NAKIVO Backup & Replication without additional components or custom development.

Mas Logistics also uses Wasabi Covert Copy, which adds another layer of resilience by creating a locked, hidden and immutable copy of stored data. This provides additional protection should the primary repository become compromised, deleted or unavailable.

OmniNet: From Architecture to Managed Service

Technology partner OmniNet played a key role in designing and implementing the solution.

“OmniNet played a fundamental role throughout the entire project. More than simply a technology provider, they proved to be a trusted strategic partner, combining deep technical expertise with a genuine understanding of our business needs and transforming them into a robust, reliable, and future-proof solution,” says Alberto Donadello, CEO, Mas Logistics.

Mas Logistics selected OmniNet for their technical expertise, experience with complex infrastructure and cybersecurity projects, and consultative approach.

OmniNet also brought a strong reputation in the Italian market, backed by numerous customer references, together with certified strategic partnerships with NAKIVO, Wasabi and OVHcloud that gave Mas Logistics added confidence in the project.

Rather than designing the environment around a single vendor, OmniNet combined NAKIVO, Wasabi and OVHcloud technologies into an architecture tailored to Mas Logistics’ business continuity requirements.

“The combination of NAKIVO Backup & Replication, Wasabi, and OVHcloud has enabled us to build a modern, resilient infrastructure perfectly aligned with our business continuity and data protection requirements,” says Alberto Donadello. “We have implemented a solution that successfully combines high performance, operational simplicity, security, and cost efficiency, allowing us to confidently manage both everyday operations and the most demanding Disaster Recovery scenarios.”

The NAKIVO environment is now operated as a fully managed service by OmniNet. Their team handles configuration, updates, monitoring and maintenance while continuously checking backup jobs, replication tasks and disaster recovery processes.

The platform itself is deployed across geographically redundant OVHcloud infrastructure using multiple dedicated virtual appliances, providing high availability and resilience for the data protection service.

Through this managed service, OmniNet can proactively identify and address potential issues while reducing the day-to-day management burden on the Mas Logistics team.

Building Ransomware Resilience

Ransomware resilience was an important part of the project.

Backup data is encrypted at the source before being transferred to cloud storage, protecting information both in transit and at rest.

Access to the NAKIVO and Wasabi environments is protected with Multi-Factor Authentication and controlled privileged accounts. Sensitive administrative operations are further protected through multi-administrator approval mechanisms.

Immutable backup storage provides another critical layer. Recovery points stored in Wasabi cannot be modified or deleted during their configured retention period, helping preserve clean recovery options even if production systems or administrative credentials are compromised.

The company can recover an individual file, application or virtual machine when dealing with a localized issue, or fail over their infrastructure to the secondary site in a more serious disruption.

Testing Recovery Before It Is Needed

Mas Logistics does not rely on the assumption that their backups will work when required.

The company regularly tests recoverability in NAKIVO Backup & Replication.

These tests allow Mas Logistics and OmniNet to simulate recovery scenarios and validate VM startup, data consistency and disaster recovery procedures without interrupting the production environment.

Reports generated following testing provide additional confirmation that recovery procedures are functioning as expected and help Mas Logistics verify whether its configured Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) are being met.

This means that when a real incident occurs, Mas Logistics is relying on recovery procedures that have already been tested rather than attempting them for the first time during an emergency.

The Results

After years of using the solution, Mas Logistics has built a data protection architecture designed to grow alongside their business.

“After more than six years of successful operation, we can confidently say that choosing this architecture has proven to be the right decision. We would strongly recommend it to any organization seeking a secure, reliable, and enterprise-grade backup and Disaster Recovery platform designed to guarantee true business continuity,” says Alberto Donadello.

The combination of NAKIVO Backup & Replication and Wasabi has helped the company:

  • Strengthen ransomware resilience, preserving clean recovery points even if production systems or administrative credentials are compromised.
  • Improve business continuity with rapid, orchestrated failover to a geographically separate site.
  • Simplify backup and recovery management by bringing multiple data protection functions into a centralized platform.
  • Validate recoverability regularly through non-disruptive disaster recovery testing.
  • Scale retention and storage capacity while maintaining predictable cloud storage costs.
  • Reduce operational overhead through OmniNet’s fully managed and proactively monitored service.
  • Maintain flexibility during recovery, from individual files and VMs to complete infrastructure failover.
  • Control total cost of ownership while retaining enterprise-grade backup and disaster recovery capabilities.

The architecture gives Mas Logistics confidence that both everyday recovery requests and major infrastructure disruptions can be handled quickly and predictably.

“The combination of NAKIVO Backup & Replication and Wasabi has enabled us to build a highly reliable, easy-to-manage data protection platform that integrates seamlessly with our cloud infrastructure. Over the years, we have performed numerous recovery operations, Disaster Recovery tests, and managed several particularly complex operational scenarios. In every situation, the solution has consistently performed flawlessly, allowing us to recover data and services quickly and with complete confidence,” says Alberto Donadello. “Based on our experience, we would recommend this solution without hesitation to any organization looking for a truly reliable, secure, scalable, and cost-effective backup and Disaster Recovery platform.”
