How does NAKIVO Backup for Microsoft 365 work?
- Backup data is stored in any storage of your choice: locally, offsite or in the cloud. NAKIVO’s solution uses proprietary change tracking technology to identify changed data and run fast incremental backups after the initial or scheduled full backups.
- The solution can be set to run backups automatically whenever you need, be it once a day or even every hour.
- When it’s time to recover, you can have up to 10,000 recovery points for data recovery to the original or a different location.

What counts as a user with a subscription license for Backup for Microsoft 365?
Each of the following counts as a Microsoft 365 user in NAKIVO Backup & Replication:
- One user mailbox for Exchange Online
- One user for OneDrive for Business
- A personal site or a user with access to a SharePoint Online site with “Edit” or “Full Control” permissions
- One user with access to a team for Microsoft Teams
You do not need to count the same user more than once across multiple Microsoft 365 services. In addition, shared mailboxes, group mailboxes, group sites and guest accounts do not require a license.
Can I deliver Backup for Microsoft 365 as a service?
Yes. Managed service providers (MSPs) can use NAKIVO Backup & Replication to deliver Backup for Microsoft 365 as a service. All the solution’s advanced data protection features are available to MSPs in the MSP Enterprise Essentials, MSP Enterprise and MSP Enterprise Plus editions. You can provide your MSP clients with backup for their Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online data.
How many Microsoft 365 users can I protect with one instance?
You can protect thousands of users in a single deployment of NAKIVO Backup & Replication. You can purchase additional Microsoft 365 subscription licenses to protect more users when you scale out or up, or remove users if you scale down. Keep in mind that you must purchase at least 10 licensed units (that is, user accounts).
What are the requirements for using Backup for Microsoft 365 in NAKIVO Backup & Replication?
- If you already have NAKIVO Backup & Replication installed, check that your solution instance meets the deployment requirements for Backup for Microsoft 365 on this Help Center page.
- Depending on how you want to discover your Microsoft 365 account, you may need to provide the required API permissions to the NAKIVO solution.
- Note that you need to disable or exclude your Microsoft 365 account from the Conditional Access in Azure portal.
- Your Microsoft 365 account should be accessible over the network.
