Replication From Backup
Offload the production environment by replicating VMs directly from backups
Data Protection Strategy Done Right
A reliable data protection strategy may require you to back up and replicate certain VMs as often as possible, in order to achieve shorter RPOs and RTOs. However, both backup and replication require creating VM snapshots, thus consuming resources and time, especially in large infrastructures.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication allows you to reduce the snapshot overhead by introducing replication from backup. This functionality was designed to efficiently offload the production environment and complete VMware and Hyper-V replication jobs in shorter time frames by avoiding redundancy in snapshot creation.
Why Use Replication From Backup?
A large IT infrastructure with a significant number of hosts, VMs, and business-critical applications requires robust and efficient protection. By combining backup and replication, you can ensure reliable and cost-effective data storage on the one hand, while achieving the shortest recovery times on the other. Yet this approach entails double consumption of production resources which, in turn, can lead to lower performance. To avoid such an outcome, you can replicate your VMs directly from backups, which reduces the load on the host, frees up valuable resources, and saves time.
Reduced Snapshot Overhead
Normally, execution of a backup and replication job for the same VM would require accessing the VM twice and creating two independent snapshots. Needless to say, this requires processing resources, affecting the performance of your applications. With replication from backup, you can create a replica from the already backed-up VM, which requires only one snapshot.
Simplicity and Flexibility
Replication from backup provides you with additional options on how to perform one of the most important data protection tasks. You can run replication on its own schedule or have your backup jobs trigger replication from backup automatically. With Calendar Dashboard at hand, you can view and manage all of your jobs in a few clicks.
Offloaded Production Network
If you use backup and replication to protect the same VM, each of the operations requires you to transfer VM data from your primary environment to another location, creating an additional load on your production network. Yet if you choose to replicate from existing backups, you can use your production network only once, during the initial backup job.
How the Feature Works
Setting up replication from backup for VMware and Hyper-V environments takes no longer than setting up a traditional replication job. Once you launch a new replication job wizard and select VM backup as the source, NAKIVO Backup & Replication proceeds to read the data from the repository and inject it in the replica.
With replication from backup, NAKIVO Backup & Replication helps to save time and resources on managing your large and complex infrastructure while delivering comprehensive data protection in line with your strategy.
