LAN-free Data Transfer

NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically uses a LAN-free data transfer mode for VMware backup, Hyper-V backup, Nutanix AHV backup, VMware replication, and Hyper-V replication. The LAN-free data transfer mode boosts VM backup and replication speed as well as reduces the load on your network. This is achieved with Hot Add and Direct SAN Access features

Hot Add

If NAKIVO Backup & Replication is running on a server that has access to VM datastores, the product can read VM data directly from those VM datastores, bypassing the host’s TCP/IP stack that would otherwise impact every VM hosted on the server, and slow down the data transfer. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can mount (Hot Add) VM snapshots, and read VM data directly from VM datastores through the storage I/O stack.

Direct SAN Access

If your VMs are located on a Fiber Channel or an iSCSI storage area network (SAN), NAKIVO Backup & Replication can use the Direct SAN Access transport mode for VMware VM backup, replication, and recovery. In the Direct SAN Access mode, VM data is read directly from a SAN storage device over Fiber Channel or ISCSI, which significantly improves performance and increases the speed of backup and replication jobs, while removing the load from your production network.

You can also force jobs to only use the Direct SAN Access mode, so that jobs do not fail over to the network mode and do not saturate your LAN, if SAN is unavailable.

With LAN-free data transfer, VM backup and replication traffic does not saturate your production network while data transfer rates are dramatically increased, which results in faster backups and shorter backup windows.
