VMware VM backup is a point in time copy of an entire VMware VM that is stored in a special folder, called backup repository:
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides the ability to create VM backups on demand, on schedule and store backups locally, offsite, as well as in private/public clouds.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses VMware VM snapshots to create VM backups. When a backup job is run, the product automatically creates temporary VM snapshots of backed up VMs, identifies changed data using VMware CBT technology, sends data to the backup repository, and then removes the temporary snapshots.
All backup jobs in NAKIVO Backup & Replication are forever incremental. This means that after the initial full backup, all consequent backups will send only changed data (increments) to the backup repository. With this approach. this approach also reduces the backup time and network load.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports Exchange, Active Directory, MS SQL, Oracle, and other applications and databases running inside VMs that you back up and replicate. The product uses VMware’s quiescing technology to create application-consistent backups of VMware VMs. VMware’s quiescing technology uses VMware tools installed in VMs to instruct applications and databases to bring data on disks in a consistent state before a snapshot is made. During this process, applications and databases keep all changes in the memory so that they continue to function properly while an application-consistent snapshot is created.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses data compression and data deduplication to reduce the amount of space used by VM backups. While compression reduces the data size, deduplication ensures that only unique data blocks are saved to the backup repository:
NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses full synthetic mode to store VM backups. After each job run, the product creates a recovery point – a set of references to data blocks, which are required to reconstruct the entire VM. For example, if NAKIVO Backup & Replication determines that the amount of changes on a 100 GB VM is just 1 MB, only 1 MB of data will be transferred to the backup repository, but the created recovery point will reference all data blocks (from previous job runs) which are required to restore the entire 100 GB VM. With this approach, each recovery point “knows” all data blocks that are needed for recovery, so there is no need to apply increments one by one to get to a particular recovery point or periodically transform backed up data blocks.
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication you can to save up to 1,000 recovery points per VM backup. Using Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) rotation scheme, you can rotate recovery points on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis:
Using the backup verification feature, NAKIVO Backup & Replication checks VM backups at the block level and ensures that the data written to the backup repository is identical to the data that was read from the source VM, thus verifying that application objects, files, and the entire VM can be recovered.
