Why Store VMware VM Backups in the Cloud

Keeping VMware VM backups offsite is essential for ensuring that your business-critical data is safe. If your primary backups are stored in the same location as the production VMs, any incident in the production environment can affect your backups as well. However, setting up an offsite VM backup system for your VMware environment can be challenging and costly if you don’t have a reliable secondary site to keep your backups.

Keeping your backups in the cloud provides a number of benefits, including:

  • Safe VM Backup Storage: Storing your VM backups in the cloud keeps them safe even if your local infrastructure is unavailable. Whether hit by a local disaster, hurricane, earthquake, fire, or flood you’re safe in knowing that your backups are far away from harm's reach.
  • Flexible VM Backup Storage: Clouds can instantly adapt to your needs, as there’s no such thing as "not enough space" in the cloud: you can have almost any amount of storage space just when you need it. Instead of choosing, ordering, installing and configuring a new server or hard drives for your VMware environment, you can make a few clicks and add more space to your backup repository.
  • Affordable VM Backup Storage: When backing up to the cloud, you can use your existing VMware infrastructure and this results in a lower total cost of ownership for offsite backups. Instead of buying and configuring an offsite backup infrastructure, you can just use your existing hardware. You also win from a time and maintenance perspective, as you do not need to maintain a second location and another VMware environment.
  • Simple VM Backup Management: Managing VM backups that go to the cloud is dramatically simpler than babysitting the process of sending backups on tape or disk offsite in rotation, or maintaining a second offsite VMware environment for storing VM backups. Instead of spending hours of your time managing and pushing your backups offsite, you can take advantage of the "set it and forget it" approach in NAKIVO Backup & Replication by scheduling VM backup to the cloud.
  • Easy VM Data Recovery: Once in the cloud, you can access your VM backups at any time and from anywhere, even from home or on the go using a tablet. Moreover, in case of a disaster, you can easily recover your files, application objects, and entire VMs from the cloud and restore your VMware infrastructure much faster than with legacy offsite backup solutions.

VM Backup to Cloud Features

Simple Setup

Integration with Amazon Cloud has been designed to be very easy: you just enter Amazon credentials, a required amount of space, and click a single button. NAKIVO Backup & Replication will automatically create a new backup repository in the cloud. Integration with other clouds (such as Azure or Google) takes just a few more steps and can be done in under 15 minutes. After the setup is complete, you can back up your VMware environment directly to the cloud and perform recoveries at any time and from anywhere.

Secure Data Storage

To ensure data security, you can enable AES 256 bit encryption while the data is in flight and at rest. Furthermore, you can specify a range of IP addresses from which the backup repository can be accessed, while all other requests will be blocked.

Fast VM Backup

Sending VM backups offsite can be slow due to limited bandwidth. To speed up data transfer, NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides the Network Acceleration feature, which uses data compression and traffic reduction techniques. On average, VM backup jobs can run 2X faster when the Network Acceleration feature is turned on.

Affordable Data Storage

While cloud providers offer cloud storage at an affordable price, NAKIVO Backup & Replication helps reduce offsite backup costs with some of its own features:

  • Always incremental VM backup: All backup jobs in NAKIVO Backup & Replication are forever-incremental. This means that the product does not need to periodically run and store full VM backups, which take extra time to make and occupy an extra storage space.
  • Full synthetic data storage: All data in the backup repository is stored in the full synthetic mode. This means that unique data blocks are stored only once, while recovery points are just references to those data blocks.
  • Compression: NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically compresses VM backups to reduce the amount of storage they occupy in the backup repository. To reduce storage space even further, the data compression level can be set to maximum.
  • Deduplication: All VM backups in a backup repository are automatically deduplicated at the block level across entire backup repository. Learn more >>

How VM Backup to Cloud Works for VMware

Integration with Amazon Cloud is fully automated: NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses Amazon APIs to create an Amazon EC2 instance with a Transporter – the product component that performs actual backup and recovery. The product then automatically creates a backup repository using a number of Amazon EBS volumes that are connected to the Transporter machine.

To integrate with any other type of cloud, you just need to create a new Windows-based or Linux-based machine in the cloud, install the Transporter on the machine, and create a new backup repository from the product's UI.

When you create a VM backup job, you just need to select the backup repository created in the cloud as a destination for your VM backups. When the job is run, NAKIVO Backup & Replication reads the data in the source VMs and sends it to the Transporter in the cloud. If selected during the job creation, Network Acceleration can be used to speed up data transfer and the data can be encrypted at the source before it's sent over the network. At the cloud, the Transporter writes data to the backup repository (which can also be encrypted).
