NAKIVO Cuts Down VM Backup Time 4X while Enabling Instant Object Recovery for a US Manufacturer

Company Profile

Oregon Aero, Inc. was founded in 1989 with one product (a headset cushion) and one objective - to help people fly pain-free. The history of Oregon Aero is a story of breakthrough thinking, perseverance, listening, and deriving satisfaction from helping people. The company's focus remains on engineering and manufacturing comfortable, safer, and quieter products.

Serving aviation, law enforcement, military, and other industries, Oregon Aero designs and manufactures products that prevent and eliminate pain and improve impact protection: seating systems, ShockBlockers®, ballistic and aviation helmet upgrades, military comfort kits, and headgear upgrades. Oregon Aero provides one of the safest and most comfortable human-machine interface products in the world.

The company's passion is to create innovative, effective solutions to problems that arise when the human body interfaces with manufactured hardware. There is more to solving these problems than meets the eye. For example, making seats is one thing, but enabling you to sit comfortably is another. Oregon Aero can do both. Their products are unique and superior to what exists in the marketplace.

Oregon Aero received an award from the U.S. Air Force for outstanding efforts and personal sacrifices on the F-22 Life Support System Task Force, which returned the world's most capable fighter to fully mission-capable, restored confidence in the F-22 Raptor, and recaptured acquisition excellence for the F-22 Program. Business Challenge

Mission-critical IT systems at Oregon Aero rely on VMware vSphere. The VMs run a mix of Windows and Linux operating systems and host various applications and databases, including Windows 2008 R2 Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange 2010, SQL Server 2005/08, and several Linux Apache web servers with MySQL.

Since the core Oregon Aero's business relies on the availability of the virtual infrastructure, the company VMs require a high level of protection.

Before NAKIVO, Jamie was using a first generation VM backup product. It had a cumbersome UI, was slow to backup and restore VMs, and Jamie also could not rely on it to successfully create VM snapshots for the backups. After spending a huge amount of time on troubleshooting, Jamie set out to investigate available alternatives and evaluate the leading VMware VM backup products.

Solution

During the evaluation of NAKIVO Backup & Replication Jamie was first impressed with the speed and simplicity of the product: "I was able to create a backup from a clean install in less than 10 minutes," says Jamie. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, VM backups were created up to 4X times faster than their previous solution, and Jamie found that the full VM and granular restore process was also very quick and easy. "I also like the ability to near-instantly restore Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange objects directly from compressed and deduplicated backup repository, this has turned out to be very useful," says Jamie.

Results

"One of our VMs has failed due to a botched upgrade, and NAKIVO Backup & Replication has helped me restore that VM within minutes, saving me hours of downtime/repair time," says Jamie.

In addition, NAKIVO Backup & Replication has cut down VM backup time from 4-6 hours down to just 1-2 hours. "This has greatly reduced the network load and has allowed me to schedule other tasks which I would not have been able to do until the backups were completed," says Jamie. "I can tell you that time is money, and that the amount of time I have saved daily on not babysitting backups, or having to restart a failed backup has been immeasurable."
