NAKIVO Backup & Replication v6.1 with new features for VMware vSphere Backup is out! The new version improves VMware backup performance, speeds up recovery, and simplifies backup management.

New Features for VMware vSphere Backup in v6.1

  • Object Recovery for Microsoft Exchange 2016 and 2013 – v6.1 provides object-level recovery capabilities for the newest Microsoft Exchange versions.
  • Log Truncation for Microsoft Exchange 2016 and 2013 – The ability to truncate logs of the newest Microsoft Exchange servers during VM backup and replication.
  • Hot Add – A method for directly attaching VM disks to NAKIVO Backup & Replication appliances, which allows the ability to read VM disks directly, bypassing the network.
  • Job Chaining – The ability to start a job whenever another specified job is finished.

All of the new features work out of the box and do not require complex configuration. We continue to add functionality to NAKIVO Backup & Replication while keeping the simplicity, and we hope that v6.1 for VMware vSphere Backup will provide additional value.

Object Recovery for Microsoft Exchange 2016 and 2013

Microsoft Exchange is the industry's leading platform for e-mail messaging. The new version of NAKIVO Backup & Replication extends the support of its Instant Object Recovery feature to the latest releases of Microsoft Exchange: 2016 and 2013. Access to the Exchange Object Recovery feature is simple and straightforward:

  • After backing up a Microsoft Exchange Server, select the Recover > Microsoft Exchange objects menu item in NAKIVO Backup & Replication dashboard:Recover Microsoft Exchange objects
  • In the wizard that opens, select your Exchange server and a recovery point, and click Next:Select Exchange server
  • After the database is loaded, select emails that you need to recover and click Download or Forward:Select emails to recover

Recovery of the selected application objects will start in a couple of seconds. Optionally, you can click on a single email subject to drill down into the specific email and copy the text or recover an individual attachment:

Log Truncation for Microsoft Exchange 2016 and 2013

In addition to improved application object recovery, NAKIVO Backup & Replication v6.1 for VMware vSphere Backup can truncate log files of Microsoft Exchange 2016 and 2013. The transaction logs record all changes that are made to an Exchange server database. Over time, log files can consume all of the available disk space. Microsoft Exchange log truncation can be configured in the job wizard on a per VM basis:

  • Start creating a new job or editing an existing job with your Exchange server.
  • Proceed to the Options step of the job wizard.
  • Open the Advanced options:Job wizard: Advanced options
  • Check the Truncate Exchange logs checkbox:Truncate Exchange logs
  • Select VMs that will be subject to Exchange log truncation and select credentials for these VMs:Select VMs
  • Optionally, specify to always truncate logs:Always truncate logs
  • Save the job.

Microsoft Exchange transaction logs will be truncated on the selected VMs, starting from the next run of this job.

Hot Add

To further improve VMware backup speed, the NAKIVO Backup & Replication v6.1 introduces the Hot Add feature, which enables reading and writing data directly from/to VM snapshots, bypassing the LAN. By automatically using Hot Add, the new version offloads production LAN from the data protection traffic while significantly increasing the VMware backup and recovery speed.

Hot Add is used automatically by default. If Hot Add is not available, the system will automatically switch over to LAN mode. You can enforce the job to always use Hot Add at the job level:

  • Start creating a new job or editing an existing job.
  • Proceed to the Options step of the job wizard.
  • Open the Advanced options:Advanced options
  • Open the Transport mode menu and select the Hot Add only option:Hot Add
  • Save the job.

Hot Add will be enforced for all VMs starting from the next run of this job. If Hot Add is not available for some reason, VM processing will not be started.

Job Chaining

NAKIVO Backup & Replication v6.1 simplifies VMware backup management by introducing job chaining. With this feature, a job can finish its tasks and the next job in a chain will be triggered automatically. This way, for example, you can create a chain where a VM backup job saves data locally and then triggers a Backup Copy job that sends backup copies to Amazon cloud.

To create a chain of jobs, follow the steps below:

  • Create a first job in the chain, which can use any schedule.
  • Start creating or editing the second job that will run after the first job.
  • Proceed to the Schedule step of the job wizard.
  • Select Run after another job in the main schedule menu:vSphere Backup
  • Select the parent job in the After the job menu:Parent Job
  • Optionally, add a delay before running the current job.
  • Complete the wizard and save the job.

The second job is now configured to run after the first job is complete.
