Restoring Microsoft Exchange Objects from VM Backup
Corporate email interconnects all parts of a business and is a critical service in any enterprise environment. Therefore, it is crucial to use a reliable and efficient email server like Microsoft Exchange Server. As an email service, Microsoft Exchange contains and manages a bunch of objects, such as mailboxes, groups, calendars, and various schedulers. Losing any part of Exchange objects due to an accidental deletion, or even a malicious action can have a significant impact on a business. However, recovery of such essential data can be complex and time-consuming. That is why we should regularly perform VM backup of the Exchange VM to make sure the backup includes as much updated data as possible. This will make data recovery simple and fast.
For example, a manager received a very important email:
A few days later, the manager accidentally and permanently deletes this email:
Consequently, the manager can't get access to his or her very important email, and the company’s essential workflow is messed up. Thus, we should act fast to avoid substantial schedule delays and unnecessary backlogs.
Exchange Objects Recovery with NAKIVO Backup & Replication
First, you need to open the NAKIVO Backup & Replication web interface and find the necessary backup. Under the Overview pane, select the specific backup job and verify the Virtual Machine name.
Go to Job Dashboard, click on Recover and then select Granular Recovery>>Microsoft Exchange objects.
This action will open the Exchange Objects Recovery Wizard. At this step of the Wizard, select a backup in the left pane and a recovery point in the right pane. The Automatically locate application databases checkbox should be checked at the bottom left side. Then click the Next button.
At the second step of the Wizard, all Exchange databases will be automatically found in the VM backup. In Items, select the database which contains the user’s (in our case, Manager 1) mailbox with the deleted email inside. Check the checkbox to the left of this email. After that, click on Download.
To change the decoding type for the selected objects, click on Message decoding…
There will be two options in the appearing dropdown menu: Default and Alternative.
In our case, we will select the Default Message decoding type. Click on the Download button, and you’ll get a zipped .EML file.
Save the zip archive to your hard drive and unzip it.
Now you can find your .EML file with the recovered objects inside.
