So let’s take a closer look at what’s new in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta.
Bare-Metal Recovery
Organizations that rely on physical servers to run their operations can now restore the entire physical machine from backups to the same or identical hardware. The new feature streamlines data recovery by eliminating the requirements for pre-installed operating systems and software.
Bare-metal recovery in v10.9 Beta offers a fast and efficient approach to restoring physical machines to the last known good state, helping organizations to minimize data loss, roll back any undesired changes, and localize malware attacks.
Backup Malware Scan
Backup data is susceptible to malware attacks just like virtual or physical machines. In fact, certain ransomware strains are designed to infiltrate backups in an attempt to disrupt the recovery process. NAKIVO Backup & Replication already offers several features to help prevent ransomware infections spreading to your backups, including immutable backups in the cloud and other S3-compatible platforms.
v10.9 Beta expands your anti-ranosmware arsenal by allowing you to scan backup data for malware before completing recovery. The latest beta version can be integrated with Microsoft Windows Defender, ESET NOD32 Smart Security, and Sophos Endpoint Protection to perform a malware scan to make sure that the backup can be safely used. If malware is detected, you can choose to fail the recovery or recover to an isolated network.
The new functionality can help organizations proactively defend against dormant malware and aid in investigating cyber incidents. In addition to minimizing the likelihood of cyber incidents, this functionality can help meet strict regulatory requirements and strengthen DR strategies.
Direct Recovery from Tape
Prior to v10.9 Beta, recovery from backups stored on tape media requires restoring the full contents of a recovery point to a staging repository first. Although reliable, this approach was time-consuming and susceptible to errors.
With Direct Recovery to Tape, you can now recover full virtual machines and EC2 instances directly to your infrastructure from backups stored on tape media. Such an approach improves recovery times and efficiency. Supported platforms are VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Amazon EC2 and physical workloads via P2V.
Direct Connect for MSPs
We introduced Direct Connect in v10.3 to allows MSPs to access the remote resources of their clients via a single direct port connection – without the need for a VPN connection. This feature also proves handy for large distributed environments using the multi-tenant mode in NAKIVO Backup & Replication.
Starting from v10.9 Beta, the Direct Connect functionality expands on the initial support of VMware vSphere. Now the feature includes support for physical machines, VMware Free ESXi hosts and NAS-based transporters and enables cross-platform recovery with backup export. Direct Connect now also works for the Site Recovery feature to create and test DR sequences for multiple tenants without complex networking.
With a broader range of supported workloads and deployment configurations, the extended Direct Connect functionality enables organizations to make the most of their IT assets and offer better managed services to clients.
New Platform Support
A key component of lasting protection is the range of supported deployments and configurations offered by the solution. NAKIVO Backup & Replication already supports one of the widest ranges of platforms for deployment and data protection. v10.9 Beta adds even more options to the list of supported environments.
vSphere 8.0 U1 Support
The latest update of VMware’s distributed workload platform offers increased performance for high-end AI/ML workloads, along with numerous operational efficiency and security improvements following last year’s release of vSphere 8.0 with many interesting features. Organizations can already tap into the benefits of the latest virtualization technology while retaining established data protection operations with NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta, including VM backup, replication and disaster recovery.
Debian Support
Debian is an open-source operating system (OS) based on the Linux kernel. Known for its stability and reliability, Debian is a popular choice as the OS for servers, workstations, and a variety of other devices.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta can be installed on Debian operating systems and can back up physical machines running Debian OS.
Feature Improvements
Now, let’s quickly go over the enhancements and extended capabilities of existing NAKIVO Backup & Replication features.
NAKIVO Backup for Microsoft 365: Support for New Mailbox Types
NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta introduces support for two types of mailboxes in Exchange Online (as part of the Backup for Microsoft 365 functionality):
- Archive mailbox support
- Litigation Hold and In-Place Hold items support
Now you can back up Exchange Online in-place archive mailboxes and recover email messages, calendar items, and other data marked for long-term storage. You can also back up items that have Litigation or In-Place Hold enabled. The enhancements provide better coverage of SaaS data to help organizations comply with legal requirements and regulatory requests.
External Database Support for Multi-Tenancy
So far, an external database was supported for the NAKIVO Backup & Replication main component (that is, the Director) with single-tenant deployments only. By switching the solution’s built-in database to a more powerful external database, you can ensure that the Director’s data remains healthy as your infrastructure changes. Now, in v10.9 Beta, MSPs and enterprises with multi-tenant solution deployments can use an external PostgreSQL to store the application’s configuration data. This enhancement can help MSPs and large-scale enterprises manage sophisticated data protection configurations in large environments.
Microsoft Exchange Server Backup: PST Recovery
NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.9 Beta adds the ability to export Microsoft Exchange Server objects, including private mailboxes, public folders, and emails, to a PST file. Storing a copy of Exchange Server data in a custom location provides an additional option for backup and archival and allows offline access to email, contacts, and other data.
